Quoi qu'il en soit de sa valeur absolue, c'est-à-dire du degré de vérité qu'il représente, l'évolutionnisme a pris aujourd'hui une importance telle qu'on ne saurait le négliger; serait-il besoin de rappeler qu'il constitue à lui seul presque toute la philoso phie des sciences naturelles; de dire la place qu'il prend dans les sciences historiques et sociales, le rôle enfin qu'il a aujourd'hui dans les sciences théologiques> Il semble que, longtemps fleuve resté dans son lit, il soit subitement monté et répande ses ondes avec les germes qu'elles charrient sur tous les terrains de la pensée humaine. Devant les prétentions de certains de ses représentants, devant cette vérité beaucoup moins nouvelle en fait qu'elle ne paraît à plusieurs, un devoir s'impose à qui veut chercher pour son compte la vérité; lorsqu'on sent partout une idée, lorsqu'on la respire pour ainsi dire à tout instant, on ne saurait trancher à priori de sa vérité et du bien-fondé de ses prétentions; le respect même envers la 'vérité exige davan tage.
