This book examines the dramatic differences in the histories of France and Germany's railroad systems during the First World War. Before the war, France had poured vast sums into private railroad concessions, which focused on shareholder profits and neglected maintaining and renewing their railroad systems. Germany, on the other hand, had nationalized its railroads, giving the government more control over developing the country's rail infrastructure. When war broke out, Germany's efficient and well-maintained railroads gave it a major logistical advantage over France, which suffered from transportation delays and shortages throughout the war. The author's research reveals that Germany's nationalized railroad system played a significant role in its early military successes and ultimate victory in the war.
