Synopsis
This book offers a collection of texts from anthems – sacred choral works – which, as the author argues, have not been given their proper dignity and place in public worship. The author's intention is to secure for the anthem its rightful place in the midst of the service, where noble and appropriate words, usually those of Scripture, are sung by the choir while the congregation listens reverently and silently. This act of worship can become an intelligible part of public worship, the author claims, if the people are provided with the words sung by the choir. The book therefore gathers together a collection of texts from anthems in order that they may be placed within the sight of all.
