Synopsis

This 19th-century polemic sermon from the temperance movement rails against the ills of Brockton, Massachusetts, that its author believed led to moral ruin in the factory town. Beginning with money-worship, the author sees no good in the wealth creation of capitalism and decries the lack of domestic tranquility it caused. There are other threats that follow in the wake of urban factory life, the author claims: workingmen who spend their pay on drinking and gambling; unsupervised young men and women left to their own devices, corrupted by impure literature, unsuitable friends, and debasing influences like dancing and theater-going. The author saw the solution as Christian faith and piety, and a rejection of worldly pursuits, a message that was likely well-received by some members of his congregation, but has fallen out of favor with progressive thinkers in later generations.
