This book is the result of many years of labor, study, and experience in the art of sacred music, and the author has exerted himself to the utmost to render it as perfect as possible. In this connection the present work has a marked advantage over all preceding books for sacred music in the United States, as the author has access to all the most celebrated publications, both European and American. There was formerly a great variety of discordant opinions and practices respecting Church Music in this country, but experience has done much to correct them. The author has attempted to divest himself of prejudice in favor of any particular style or author and the only ground upon which he has assumed the responsibility of introducing changes is to render the Music more perfect and better adapted to the various purposes of Sacred Music.
