Excerpt from Socialism and Anarchism: Dissertation in Part Fulfilment of the Conditions Necessary for the Attainment of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, School of Political Science, Columbia College
Rodbertus' historic studies were devoted chiefly to and therefore its economic development occupies a larger share of his attention than that of any other period of history except our own. He views it as the culmination of the po/is, and as illustrating all which that form of development has to offer. The oileos, or primitive family, formed the germ of the ancient city-state among the Greeks and Romans. Here the economic arrangements were simple, and such as would be found in a community where there was no division of labor, no distinction between manufacturing and agriculture, but little transportation, few exchanges, limited use of money, and where there could be no contest between 'the laborer and the capitalist, because the former was the property of the latter. There was but one form of tax, a progressive income tax in Athens, and a general prop erty tax for citizens in Rome. The expenses of the state were few. There was but little distinction between it and society. The same families were leaders of both. Solidarity was the principle of organization throughout.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a unique perspective on the historical evolution of social and economic systems. The author, a German thinker of the mid-19th century, examines the development of society through the lens of labor and its organization. He challenges traditional economic theories, particularly those of Adam Smith and David Ricardo, arguing that labor is the sole source of value and that capitalism, with its inherent inequalities, is a flawed system destined for transformation. The book delves into the economic systems of antiquity and medieval Europe, analyzing the rise and fall of slavery, feudalism, and the rise of free competition. It explores the cyclical nature of economic crises, arguing that the inherent contradictions within capitalism will inevitably lead to its downfall. The author presents a compelling case for the need for a more equitable distribution of wealth and argues that the state plays a vital role in guiding societal change. He envisions a future social order based on the principles of collective ownership and state management of production, a future where labor is valued above all else. This book offers a fascinating and thought-provoking exploration of the evolution of economic thought, revealing the inherent contradictions within capitalism and advocating for a more equitable and just future.
