November 17 „ich denke, wir haben auch sonst mit einander davon gesprochen, dafs Sie vielleicht we niger fein und richtig ilher die Griechen artheilen wiirden, wenn Sie selhst griechisch zn lesen gewohnt wären. So weit hin ich entfernt, die eigent liche Sprachkenntni/s zu einem wichtigen Ma/sstah der Vertraulichkeit mit den Alten zu machen. Goethe und Herder, die vielleicht beide nur mafsig Griechisch wissen, sind hier redende Beweise. (zu demselben Zwecke führt Prof. Grenier dem Minister Fe'rry gegenüber im „constitutionnel (august 1879) mit grofser Beredtsamkeit aus, dafs auch 'descartes, Corneille, Bossuet, de Betz, La Rochefoucauld, Bussy, Lafontaine, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Rousseau, Chateau briand, Musset, Balzac, Beranger, Mme. De Sevigne und G. Sand sämmtlich kein Griechisch verstanden und doch eine ganz leidliche allgemeine Bildung besessen hätten. Red.)
