A l'aurore du xvv siècle et au déclin du xve, le sculpteur Matteo est bien l'anneau de la chaîne qui relie les deux époques; quelques années encore et c'en est fait de l'expression des doux sentiments, de la demi-teinte harmonieuse et de cette sobriété des reliefs, où la vie est intense, parce qu'elle se révèle par ses accents les plus essentiels; où le dessin est grand, parce qu'il est concentré et rassemblé; où l'expression est forte, parce que la main traduit l'émotion de l'âme. Matteo est le dernier qui reste encore contenu, doucement ému, pieusement recueilli, ennemi du tumulte, des grands gestes, des contorsions superbes et des gigantesques efforts il sculpte, pour ainsi dire, en ton mineur. A une certaine période de sa vie, on peut passer sans le voir, parce qu'il est voilé, modeste, et ne cherche que l'expres sion douce et les doux sentiments on peut ne pas l'entendre, parce qu'il parle bas; mais si on s'approche et si on l'écoute, il vous dit des choses exquises. Il sait refléter dans ses oeuvres la tendresse infinie de son coeur et la foi profonde qui l'anime, et pour ceux qui n'ont point visité Lucques, il suffit d'arrêter les yeux sur une seule figure tendant les bras vers un calice, au mur du Bargello de Florence, pour qu'ils écrivent son nom parmi ceux des maîtres.
