Geb. 10.10.1829 Gardelegen/Altmark; gest. 14.10.1910 Paris. Der Sohn eines Justizkommissars studierte Philologie in Berlin, Gießen, Paris und Montpellier. Nach der Promotion arbeitete er als Hauslehrer in Frankreich, dann als Privatsekretär des späteren Ministers Barthélemy Saint-Hilaire. Seit 1860 war er Schweizer Konsul und Vertreter einer Uhrenfabrik in Yokohama, gründete dort die erste englische Zeitung Japan Times und den Japan Punch und schrieb französische Korrespondenzartikel. 1869 kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück und war 1870/71 Kriegsberichterstatter für den Preußischen Staatsanzeiger. 1878 übernahm er das Pressereferat des Auswärtigen Amtes in Berlin.
