Cette nouvelle répandit l'alarme dans Québec, et aussitôt on exposa le Très - Saint - Sacrement dans les églises, on fit des processions et d'autres exercices de piété, pour implorer le secours du Ciel. Cette crainte n'était que trop fondée Car pour dire vrai, écrivait - on dans la relation de cette année, il n'y a rien de si aisé à ces barbares que de mettre, quand ils voudront toutes nos habitations à feu et à sang. Ce qui donne cet avantage à l'ennemi sur nous, c'est que toutes les maisons hors de Québec sont sans défense et éloignées les unes des autres, sur les rives du Saint - Laurent, dans l'es pace de huit ou dix lieues. Il n'y a en chacune que deux, trois ou quatre hommes, souvent même qu'un seul avec sa femme et quantité d'enfants, qui tous peuvent être enlevés ou tués, sans qu'on en sache rien dans la maison la plus voisine. A la vérité Québec est en état de défense mais il ne serait plus qu une prison dont on ne pourrait plus sortir en assurance, et où l'on mourrait de faim, si la cam pagn{e était ruinée Aussi, dès qu'on apprit que l'armée Iroquoise était en marche, l'alarme fut si universelle qu'on abandonna, comme en proie à l'ennemi, les maisons de cam pagne, et qu'enfin tout le monde se fût cru perdu, si M. D'ar genson n'eût rassuré les esprits par son courage.
