4; il successore di lui Caracalla (l), sembra che la sua morte non si possa protrarre al di là dell'anno 217. Gli antichi, e massime gli orientali, gli attribuirono il predicato di santo, e nel martirologio di Usuardo si trova registrato il suo nome al 4 Dicembre. Ma il Baronio e gli altri censori dal martiro logic romano a' tempi di Gregorio XIII e Sisto V ne lo can cellarono; e questo emendamento fu mantenuto nella nuova edizione, fattasene nel 4751 sotto Benedetto XIV; perchè, come è avvertito nella lettera al re di Portogallo, che le serve di prefazione, la dottrina di Clemente non è in tutto sicura, ma si sospetta in qualche parte d'errore.
