Synopsis

In a joyous marriage that belies the tragic events that follow, this book tells the story of Heracles, a heroic figure in Greek mythology, and Deianira, daughter of King Oeneus of Calydon. As Heracles sets out from Trachis, Deianira is plagued by a terrible secret: the poisoned cloak she has given her husband in an attempt to win back his love. When he puts it on, he is overcome by excruciating agony, and Deianira, realising her fatal mistake, takes her own life. As Heracles lies on the brink of death, his son informs him of his wife's suicide, and the depth of the tragedy deepens as Heracles orders the building of a funeral pyre, accepting his fate as he requests his son to marry his most recent captive. The book delves into the themes of love, jealousy, and the destructive inevitability of fate, offering a complex and enduring portrayal of human suffering and loss.
