On ignore que la Trappe existait cinq cents ans avant l'abbé de fiancé; qu'elle eut pour premier pére saint Bernard; qu'elle n'a jamais eu d'autre législateur que saint Benoît. On ignore que la pé nitence et les vertus qui s'y pratiquent remontent ainsi à l'origine du Christianisme, et qu'avant elle, et à côté d'elle, des millions d'hommes ont vécu de cette vie dans tout l'univers chrétien.
