Excerpt from The Monthly Packet of Evening Readings for Members of the English Church, Vol. 10: July December, 1885
To reach Castelbianco it is necessary to quit the high road from Cannes, which keeps on a fairly level course, and marks the fertile plain with a broad white band as winding as a river. Leaving it on your right, you will follow a rough tract over which it is just possible for a cart to jolt for some hundred yards, but no more; so that if you have clung to dignity so far, you must now resign it, and make your way on foot, as best you can, along one of the small indentations - they cannot be called paths - which seam the high ground to your left. There are, however, consolations for the labour, especially in early spring, and before the great heats Of the south have made themselves felt; for, as you climb, snow-peak after snow-peak will unfold itself, village and olive wood, cape and blue Mediterranean, open out in every tender and lovely gradation Of colour until, passing clumps of delicate lilac anemones, and startled by seeing here and there great scarlet heads flaming among the scanty wheat, you strike upon a wild path cut through the straggling vines, and at last reach a broad terrace running round the garden wall Of the house, shaded on one side by trees, on the other facing the mountains. There, a gash in their soft outlines, a deeper violet in the shadows, mark the Saut da Loup. By its side, perched on the top of what looks like an inaccessible hill, is Gourdon, and lower down, nestling among broad and silvery masses of Olive, lies Grasse.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book transports readers to the sun-drenched landscapes of the French Riviera, weaving a captivating tale set against the backdrop of 19th-century provincial life. The narrative unfolds in the quaint town of Grasse, renowned for its fragrant perfume industry, and the secluded chateau of Castelbianco, home to a cast of intriguing characters. Central to the story is the enigmatic Madame Merillon, a woman of sharp wit and questionable morals, who has taken up residence at Castelbianco. Her presence casts a shadow over the lives of her granddaughter Marcelle and the young heir, Lambert Solignac, who yearns for a life of adventure beyond the confines of Grasse. As the author skillfully delves into the complexities of family relationships, social expectations, and the allure of wealth, themes of ambition, independence, and the enduring power of the past come to light. Through vivid descriptions and insightful observations, this book offers a glimpse into a bygone era, where tradition clashes with modernity, and the pursuit of personal fulfillment takes center stage. It leaves readers pondering the choices we make, the legacies we inherit, and the transformative potential of stepping outside the boundaries of our familiar worlds.
