Excerpt from Manuel de l'Art Chrétien
Arrivé, en suivant cette marche, au terme de notre première partie, nous nous attacherons à l'exposé de l'iconographie chrétienne faisant l'appli cation des idées que nous aurons émises, nous examinerons comment l'on doit, comment l'on peut représenter Dieu, la Sainte Vierge, les Anges, les Saints; rapporter les faits de l'histoire sacrée; personnifier les êtres matériels, comme le ciel et la terre les êtres de raison, comme les vertus et les vices. Notre première partie étant comme la grammaire de la langue parlée par l'artiste chrétien, nous en ferons ensuite un dictionnaire rai sonné, que nous divisons en trois autres parties consacrées à l'iconographie générale, a l'iconographie spéciale des mystères de la religion chrétienne et à l'iconographie des Saints.
Toute langue se forme par l'usage, et c'est surtout sur la signification des mots que l'usage exerce un empire presque souverain le langage de l'art comme tous les autres langages est soumis à cette loi nous voulons d'autant mieux la respecter qu'en toutes choses nous n'aimons rien tant que l'esprit traditionnel.
