L'art a été exercé à Lyon sous toutes les formes, et l'on ne compte pas en cette ville moins de trois mille maîtres d'art ou de métier dans les deux siècles et demi qui commencent au milieu du xrv° siècle pour finir aux dernières années du XVI° siècle. Nous n'avons pas à revenir sur les faits d'ordre général, quelque intérêt qu'ils offrent'; peut-être n'a - t - ou pas pu bien juger, d'après nos études 2, de l'importance relative que l'art de la gravure en particu lier a eue à Lyon, gravure en relief et gravure en creux, gravure sur métal et gravure sur bois. C'est pourquoi nous allons parler encore des graveurs.
