Soweit bestimmte Angaben zur Speziellen 'entwickl'ungsge'schichte der Muskulatur vorliegen, sind sie in den Morphologischen Bemer kungen am Schlusse der einzelnen Abschnitte aufgeführt. Hier finden sich auch°die fremden, wie die eigenen Betrachtungen, die durch kritische Verarbeitung der bisher bekannten Tatsachen.däs Verstandnis des Muskelsystems und seiner Einzeleinrichtungen zu fördern versuchen. Die lebendigste Vorstellung von den zur end giltigen Ausgestaltung führenden Vorgängen gewinnt man meines Erachtens, wenn man die Vorgänge zunachst als rein physikalische auffaßt, als Wirkungsfolgen von Massen auf Massen: Ein'sbhrankungen ergeben sich bei entsprechender Aufmerksamkeit von selbst. Die Berechtigung einer mechamstisch-kausalen Betrachtungsweise, die jede Zielstrebigkeit verneint, ist nicht anzufechten, wie E. Albrecht in seinen Vorfragen der Biologie zur Genüge auseinandergesetzt hat. Wenn bei einer fruheren Gelegenheit von morphologischer Seite vor meiner uberregen Phantasie in kausalen Ableitungen gewarnt worden ist, so kann ich dazu nur bemerken, daß ich diese durch ein gehende Beschäftigung mit der Materie vielleicht noch gesteigerte Phantasie fur kausal-morphologische Forschung solange für vorteilhaft ansehe, als sie nicht von offenkundig falschen Voraussetzungen aus geht und in ihren Folgerungen logisch bleibt. Ich trage aber auch kein Bedenken, den Leser auf diese Warnung hinzuweisen, damit er bei der Lekture der morphologischen Bemerkungen im speziellen Teile und mancher Abschnitte des allgemeinen Teiles die Kritik oder den Zweifel wach erhalte.
