At the turn of the century, it was common to hear influences from the past in popular music, as well as classical music styles like those of Bach, and Handel. Influences from jazz, and other cultural traditions were also present, making for a rich tapestry of styles and genres. There was a marked change however between the years 1900 to 1920, when a new style of composition took hold and ushered in what many consider to be the start of the "modern" era in music. The author investigates this dramatic shift, looking at the works of Debussy, Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss, among others.
