She offered once or twice to speak in fa vour of Joseph; but found her ladv's heart so obdurate, that she prudently dropt all such efforts. She considered there were more footmen in the house, and some as stout fellows, though not quite so hand some, as Joseph; besides, the reader hath already seen her tender advances had not met with that encouragement she might have reasonably expected. She thought she had thrown away a great deal of sack and sweetmeats on an ungrateful rascal.

As the story unfolds, Joseph is relentlessly pursued by Lady Booby, who tries to seduce him, and Mr. Peter Pounce, a scheming lawyer who conspires to ruin him. The author, a master of satire, humorously depicts the upper classes, corrupt clergy, and legal profession, while celebrating the virtues of the working class. At its core, the book is an exploration of morality, virtue, and the importance of resisting temptation. Its unique style and enduring insights into human nature have solidified its place as a classic of English literature.
