Synopsis

Excerpt from Address and Poem at the Dedication of the Hallowell Library: March 9, 1880, With Historical Sketch

The desire for a library has been part of the growth of Hallowell. Quite early in its history, a gentleman - never in the town, but connected with one of the Hook families offered his private collection as the basis for one. The times were hardly ripe, however, and no response being made, the books were scattered in other directions. Another at tempt to accomplish this 'desirable object is also known to have been made, but the de tails oi it are not now to be traced. Years after, the Young Men's Society - a literary and debating club - purchased a small and well-selected library; but when their associa tion died out, it lay useless until added to the present collection.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a detailed examination of the founding of the Social Library in the historic town of Hallowell, Maine during the mid-1800s. Beginning with an initial gentleman's offer of his private library to the town, the author traces the library's founding, growth, and eventual move into its own custom-built space in 1880. Interwoven with this narrative is a broader history of the intellectual and cultural life of Hallowell, highlighting the town's passion for literature and its influential role in the development of American cultural institutions. The author carefully explores the motivations of the library's founders, their vision for its role in the community, and the challenges they faced, particularly in fundraising and finding a permanent home for the growing collection. The book sheds light on the transformative power of libraries as a force for fostering education, civic engagement, and cultural enrichment, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of libraries, American cultural history, or the role of cultural institutions in shaping communities.
