Excerpt from Science, Vol. 27: A Weekly Journal Devoted to the Advancement of Science, Publishing the Official Notices and Proceedings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; January-June, 1908
The culmination of Thomson's applica tion of Fourier mathematics, and perhaps his most sensational contribution to science, was his estimate of the age of the earth,' based upon the time it has taken to cool, our knowledge beingsderived from the measurement of the rate of increase of temperature as we go below the surface of the earth. His conclusion was that the earth had required from one to two hun dred million years to cool from its molten state to the present, a conclusion which Was a violent shock to the geologists, who required a far greater period for the formation of the rocks.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, written by a highly respected physicist, examines the life and scientific work of Lord Kelvin, a giant in the fields of mathematics and physics. It comprehensively narrates Kelvin's life's work including his contributions to the invention of the transatlantic telegraph cable, his role as an electrical engineer, and his dedication to the study of temperature and thermodynamics. It also sheds light on his unsuccessful attempts to apply Newtonian physics to explain phenomena such as the motion of the luminiferous ether. Despite these setbacks, his life's work is a reminder of the importance of curiosity and persistence in furthering our understanding of the physical world.
