Synopsis

Excerpt from Collegii Salmanticensis Fr. Discalceatorum B. Mariæ De Monte Carmeli Parenti Suo Eliæ Consecrati, Cursus Theologicus Summam Theologicam Angelici Doctoris D. Thomæ Complectens, Vol. 14: Tractatus XXI, De Incarnatione, Pars Secunda

In the complex quest to grasp the elusive concept of existence, this book meticulously examines the dynamic interplay between nature, subsistence, and existence in created beings. Drawing upon the profound philosophical and theological insights of St. Thomas Aquinas, the author embarks on a journey to unravel the intricacies of these interconnected realities. Delving into the depths of Thomistic metaphysics, the book elucidates the nature of substance and its essential attributes, such as subsistence and existence. Through a rigorous analysis of the concepts of modality, actuality, and potentiality, the author reveals the fundamental distinction between the essence and existence of finite beings. Moving beyond abstract principles, the book explores the practical implications of these metaphysical truths. It examines the dynamic relationship between subsistence and existence in the context of created substances, highlighting the unique role of subsistence in conferring upon creatures their inherent capacity to exist as distinct and independent entities. The author also delves into the intricate question of the origin of existence, providing a comprehensive understanding of the divine act of creation and its transformative impact on created beings. Ultimately, this book offers a profound exploration of the metaphysical foundations of existence, inviting readers to contemplate the nature of reality and the profound implications of their own existence.
