Après avoir écrit la vie de l'immortel Découvreur du Canada, j'ai cru que je devais a mes compatriotes de leur faire connaître les évènements qui suivirent la période de découvertes, et auxquels participèrent plusieurs rejetons de la famille des Cartier. C'estassez dire que, depuis la mort du grand navigateur malouin jusqu'à l'arrivée de Cham plain, lo fondateur de cette vieille ville qui nous est si chère, l'écho des forêts riveraines du grand fleuve retentit plus d'une fois des voix françaises. Les pêcheurs bretons et normands, les marchands de traite fréquentaient annuel lement les plages de la Nouvelle - France, les uns pour y exercer leur industrie, les autres pour offrir aux aborigènes les bagatelles de l'eur0pe, en échange des riches fourrures des animaux des bois. Aussi, lorsque Champlain visita l'acadie pour la première fois, il lia connaissance avec un marin de la Biscaye qui faisait la pêche sur les côtes orientales de la péninsule depuis plus de quarante ans.
