Synopsis
This book, drawing from interviews with state mine inspectors and representatives of industrial compensation commissions, presents a standardized approach to the national collection of mining statistics. The author, a mining engineer from the Bureau of Mines, was appointed alongside a committee of industry representatives to address the lack of uniformity in the reporting and classification of accidents being published at state level. By introducing universal forms for states to record and publish data relating to mine equipment, labor, and accidents, the book presents a detailed solution to the problem. It provides a directory of coal mines, metal mines, metallurgical plants and quarries, and outlines the steps needed to ensure that all mines, quarries and associated plants across the United States adhere to these new standards, enabling a true comparison of safety and efficiency metrics between organizations for the first time. The principles set out in this book were developed in response to the Federal income tax law of 1916, but remain a valuable resource for standardizing the collection of data in the mining industry.
