Mit andern Städten feyert auch Basel das große Saecularfest dieses Jahres. Und es ist dazu wohl berechtigt befser berechtigt als manche andere Stadt. Nach Basel ist die neu erfundene Kunst gleich zu Anfang und unmittelbar durch einen Gehilfen Guttenbergs verpflanzt worden; sie wunelte schnell und gut, und wie bald, wie lange, wie herrlich blühte sie! Vielleicht an keinem Orte mehr hat die Buchdruekerey mit so rüstigem Eifer und mit solchem Erfolge den beiden Aufgaben zugleich gedient welche die Menschheit im XV. Und XVI. Jahrhundert beweg ten der Wiederbelebung der antiken Litteratur und der Verbeiserung der Kirche:, und gewiss, sie würde noch kräftiger von hier aus ein gegrill'en, Johannes Frohen würde den grofsen Geist seiner Zeit in noch glanzvollerer Weise vertreten haben wenn nicht derselbe Mann, dem Basel jene zwiefache Wirksamkeit zumeist verdankte Desiderius Erasmus, in Dingen der Reformation bald lieber gedämpfl als entzündet, mehr gehemmt als gefördert hätte.
