Tout le monde sait que, jusqu a une époque assez récente, beau coup de chartes et de manuscrits sont devenus la proie des relieurs et ont été employés par eux, en lanières plus ou moins larges, tant sur le dos que sur les coins de leurs volumes, lorsqu'ils n'ont pas servi à en recouvrir complètement les plats. A une date plus ancienne, les plats eux-mêmes ont été, quelquefois, formés par la juxtaposition de papiers divers et de feuillets arrachés à des cahiers ou à des registres.
Cet emploi barbare a eu comme conséquence la destruction d'une grande quantité de documents précieux, mais comme il est peu de maux dont il ne sorte quelque bien, cet emploi a, en même temps, permis la conservation, généralement très fragmentaire, de pièces intéressantes qui auraient été, sans cela, irrémédiablement perdues.
Aussi, l'attention des bibliothécaires et des archivistes est - elle, depuis longtemps, attirée sur les anciennes reliures; et longue serait la liste toujours ouverte, d'ailleurs des trouvailles dont leur examen a été l'occasion.
