Synopsis
This book argues the French Revolution was a necessity and that the privileged classes contributed to their own downfall by opposing reforms. The author examines primary documents and prior research to provide a fresh perspective on a topic that has divided scholars for decades. This book traces the history of the Catholic Church's, aristocracy's, and monarchy's relentless pursuit of wealth and power at the expense of the French people. While the rest of Europe underwent gradual reform, France remained stagnant under the weight of the Ancien Régime. Unwilling to share their privileges, the elites pushed France to the brink of collapse and ultimately sowed the seeds of their own destruction.
