Questo libercolo, benchč all Ingrosso debba dirsi che venga in luce perla terza volta, con sta di parti fra loro diverse quanto al tempo della composizione e al numero delle ristampe. Il capitolo circa la lingua dei Promessi Sposi fu inserito tra i Saggi Critici, dei quali il 1878 mandai fuori un'edizione ch'č ormai esaurita, e riprodotto il 1880 in un libro apposito di cui fu come il nucleo. Quivi lo accompag'nai con sei appendici: l'una consisteva nella terza ristampa del Fra Galdino, un dei Saggi pur esso, altre quattro davan la trascrizione di brani altrui che mi parvero arrecare un buon rincalzo alle Opi niomi mie, e la sesta e la pių lunga era una cri tica assai viva ad un libro consimile di Luigi Morandi In una non breve Prefazione dissi dei limiti in cui abbia ragionevolmente a con tenersi il culto e lo studio della prosa man zoniana, specialmente nelle scuole.
