Synopsis

Excerpt from The Problem of Duty: A Study of the Philosophy of Conduct

I do not ask that the reader accept the testimony of another. The challenge is that he shall search his own consciousness to its depths and bring back its report. I have tried to tell merely what my consciousness assures me. The question for the reader is: What does your consciousness, honestly and thoroughly questioned, reply to these statements I only venture to offer them as a means for bringing the study home to other minds.

If this essay seems to be fragmentary the material for a philosophy of ethics and religion, rather than the completed thought I may, perhaps, be allowed to refer my readers to The Theology of Civilization, in which I have endeavored more fully to relate together the results of this study into their proper unity. If there is further wish to know the practical outcome of this sort of study; if any one asks the chief of all vital questions, namely, What is the test and working value of this view of the Problem of Duty possibly the reader may be willing to find my answer in The Coming People, where I have tried to express in the simplest terms an interpretation of life, which seems to me to be a perennial inspiration toward noble conduct and reverent faith.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate nature of human duty, exploring the philosophical underpinnings of morality. The author critically examines traditional free will concepts, arguing that our actions are shaped by a complex interplay of inherited traits, environmental influences, and subconscious impulses. This book situates the discussion of duty within the context of modern scientific thought, highlighting the role of evolution and the search for an absolute standard of goodness in a world governed by natural laws. Drawing on examples from art, literature, and religion, the author contends that a spiritual principle of good guides the development of human conduct, even as scientific inquiry reveals the material underpinnings of our existence. Ultimately, this book challenges readers to rethink their understanding of responsibility, morality, and the nature of human freedom, offering a nuanced exploration of the interplay between personal choice and universal laws.
