This book presents the full arguments for and against a will granting the entirety of the author's estate to the city of Philadelphia, to be distributed primarily among orphanages and efforts toward bettering the city's infrastructure. A landmark case dating back nearly 200 years, the author's will was challenged by his heirs, who believed such a massive donation to be illegal. Beyond the legal arguments of the case, the author reflects on the relationship between charity and the law, the value of education, and the importance of public works. The book offers a fascinating look at the American legal system and the debate over charitable donations, providing insights into the historical and legal context of such endowments and their evolution in the 19th century United States.
