Ma se pel passato s' esagerņ l'importanza dell' ele mento germanico, oggi si corre all' eccesso opposto, e prevale generalmente la tendenza, se non a negarla del tutto, almeno ad attenuarla e a rimpiccolirla soverchia mente anche per la parte lessicale. La reazione contro l'esagerazione di tale influsso cominciņ con Scipione Maffei, il quale nel libro XI della sua Verona illu strata in mezzo ad osservazioni spesso giustissime, scrisse: Comunissima dottrina č che se me debba l'origine (della lingua italiana) ai Barbari, che nascesse dal mescolamento delle lingue loro con la latina. A noi sembra indubitato che niuna parte avessero nel formare l' italiano nč i Longobardi nč i Che rileva se forse una ventina di vocaboli usiamo originati dal tedesco? Nel nostro secolo il Cantł (2) fece sua la sentenza del Maffei, tentņ di ridurre a niente l'elemento nordico. Il Bartoli (3)
