To understand why the people of the northern province feel they are sacrificing cherished sentiments, even to this extent, is difficult for those who are unversed in Irish history. It is an appropriate moment then to recall the story of the Plantation and the three hundred years that followed As the City of London was charged with the organized settlement of a tract of country which has since been officially called Londonderry the writer in the following pages has endeavoured to give an account Of the settlement, to state the con dition of the country when the great Guilds of London became undertakers, to recount the struggles with their native neigturs, and to outline the social life of the people, their industries and literature. The valley of the Lower Bann has been treated with more detail, and a fuller account given of the propor tion, of the Company of lronmongers. For the emigration that took place several American books have been under contribution, particularly Charles K. Bolton's scotch-irish Pioneers in Ulster and America. In addition to the better known works of Irish history and pamphlet literature relating to thevantage some unpublished diaries, many ms. Records in the Pu ections He has added some early lists of inhabitants in ope that for genealogical purposes. For fuller particulars (if the political and changes of the nineteenth century in County Derry the reader is H. S. Morrison's recently published Modern Ulster.
