Synopsis
This book discusses the ongoing research of the Separation and Purification Section at NBS. The section was formed in 1966 to investigate the latest advances in purification technology and to establish standards in chemical purity. The book describes the development of ion exchange measurement standards, the creation of a constant research pool of styrene and divinylbenzene copolymer materials through collaboration with the Office of Standard Reference Materials, and the refinement of an existing materials bank to include the purest commercially available reagents. Zonal crystallization, a method of achieving extreme chemical purity, is also examined. The book details experimental purification methods, as well as the instrumental and theoretical research behind them. These methods have applications in fields as diverse as semiconductor manufacturing and clinical diagnostics.
