El Sr. Conde del Retamoso, con cuya amistad vengo honr�ndome desde remota fecha, ten�a conocimiento de mi modesta labor bot� nica, que ejecuto en el campo y en mi laboratorio particular desde hace m�s de veinte a�os; sabia la estimaci�n que por reputad�simos sabios extranjeros y nacionales se hac�a de mis pobres estudios; habl� de ello a S. M. El rey D. Alfonso XIII (q. D. Y S. M., cu yas iniciativas en favor de la agricultura patria son sobradamente conocidas, dispuso que el m�s humilde obrero de la ciencia espa �ola, recorriese las estepas estudiando su vegetaci�n; que un qu�mico de la pericia del Dr. D. Ramiro Su�rez analizase algunas de las tie rras y plantas que yo recogiese, y que el ilustrado ingeniero agr� nomo del Real Patrimonio, D. Rafael Janini experimentase las apli caciones que como forrajeras tuviesen las plantas analizadas por el Dr. Su�rez.
