With the passage of the cold front about midweek, temperatures dropped 20° to 30° and relative humidity about 20 percent, thus, abruptly ending the period of hot, humid weather that had persisted for 3 weeks in many areas east of the Rockies. Minima fell below freezing at many northern stations and to the lowest level on record for early September at some stations in the central portion of the country. Ardmore, South Dakota, reported Sibley and Oelwein, Iowa.
