Excerpt from Conflict and Conformity: A Probability Model and Its Application
This investigation concerns conformity behavior as it occurs in highly abstract, highly controlled situations. We want to understand and describe the core of the conformity phenomenon before it is overlaid with the complexity of other variables operating in less controlled settings. We believe these experi mental situations, particularly Aschi 3 experiments (asch, 1951, 1952, capture the.core of the phenomenon, and represent an appropriate starting point for constructing an explanatory theory. We believe that close examination of the behavior which occurs in the Asch setting, as well as careful scrutiny of the properties of the setting itself, will contribute to the develop ment of such a theory.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a new theoretical framework for understanding and predicting conformity behavior, alongside an empirical study that tests the model. Conformity is a widespread phenomenon that can have significant effects on individuals and society. The book is positioned within a long history of research on conformity, building upon and extending the seminal work of Solomon Asch. The author argues that many models of conformity are insufficiently descriptive and have not adequately captured the complexity of the conformity process. He introduces a new model that considers the conflicting pressures that individuals experience in conformity situations, and he shows how this model can be used to explain a wide range of findings from previous research. The author also presents the results of an empirical study that tests the new model. The study finds that the model provides a good fit to the data, and it supports the author's argument that conflicting pressures are a key factor in conformity behavior. The book concludes by discussing the implications of the new model for understanding conformity and for designing interventions to reduce its negative effects. The author suggests that the model can help to identify individuals who are most likely to conform, and it can also be used to develop strategies for promoting independence and critical thinking.
