This book is a compendium of detailed experimental data collected by the author and fellow researchers to investigate the water potential of soil, plant tissues, and other media in the laboratory and the field. It is designed to aid researchers who employ thermocouple psychrometers by providing them with a means of accurately calibrating their devices within a known range of variables, and of estimating water potential with greater accuracy through predictive modeling. The author notes that the thermocouple psychrometer is a useful instrument in many fields, but that its usefulness is dependent on precise calibration. However, calibration can be a time-consuming and error prone process. This book aims to give researchers a means of circumventing the problem by creating models which can predict thermocouple psychrometer activity within a certain range of variables, including the microvolt output of the device, sample and psychrometer temperature, Peltier cooling current and length of cooling time, and temperature gradients.
