Synopsis
This book fuses concepts from operations research with fire science to analyze and evaluate operational aspects of fire departments. Specifically, the author uses queuing theory to predict the probability of citizen calls for service, facility location models to evaluate fire station relocation, and simulation to combine both temporal and spatial aspects of fire service provision. The author demonstrates the efficacy of this methodology through a case study partnership with the Alexandria, Virginia, fire department. The book concludes that analytical models can provide valuable information to aid fire department managers in making decisions.
