Synopsis
This book documents findings from research conducted by the author in 1957, and presents a thorough historical and practical evaluation of packaging techniques for pre-packing ripe peaches for commercial sale. The author describes a number of experiments conducted in cooperation with growers and shippers in the Carolina's in the 1950s, in which they successfully shipped firm-ripe peaches in new packaging materials, comparing the results to traditionally shipped peaches at the time that were packed while still hard. This book provides a thorough examination of the challenges of shipping ripe peaches at a time when this was a new practice, including issues with bruising, quality control, consumer appeal, and cost-effectiveness. The book concludes with a discussion of the potential for increasing sales volume for peaches through the use of improved pre-packaging methods.
