In this book, the author critically examines the historical consequences of the Enlightenment, particularly the French Revolution, and the potential for its excesses to be repeated. The author argues that the Enlightenment's emphasis on reason and individual liberty, without a corresponding emphasis on morality and self-restraint, led to a catastrophic collapse of social order and mass violence. The book delves deeply into the complexities of human nature, exploring the potential for good and evil within us all, and the importance of cultivating virtue and compassion to avoid the destructive tendencies that can arise when reason is left unchecked. By drawing on historical examples, the author provides a timely warning about the dangers of unchecked ideology and the need for a balanced approach to human flourishing.
