Synopsis

Excerpt from Party Spirit: An Address Delivered Before the Literary Societies of Washington College, Washington Pa

An exercise like the present should aim at something more than a transient entertainment of the ear, or of the imagination. It should be more, too, than a dissertation, in scholastic or abstract style, for the use, simply, of the understanding. Its aim should be practical, as well as speculative. Having this in view, I have declined other topics that might seem to offer a better field for literary declamation, and have selected for my theme, on this occasion, the spirit or party a subject in some respects of trite and familiar character but one at the same time, of immense practical interest, especially in our own country, and in our own day, the moral aspects of which are less understood and less considered than they ought to be. I propose to institute an inquiry into the nature of party spirit; to show its evil character to point out some of the influences which expose us all to danger in this direction and to offer, finally, some thoughts on the proper remedy for so great an evil.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a robust critique of the ills originating from party spirit, which the author identifies as a perversion of human social tendencies. Given the broad impact of party spirit, the author contends that a clear understanding of its nature is the first step in combating it. In this thorough examination, the author argues that party spirit stems from a corrupted form of human selfishness. This corruption creates a distorted perception of reality that can lead to a view of rival parties as enemies and their positions as inherently evil. The author also suggests that party spirit can become a form of fanaticism that can cause individuals to behave in extreme ways. Furthermore, the author argues that party spirit is inherently opposed to the spirit of the gospel and relentlessly undermines the ideals of charity, meekness, and peace. The book concludes by emphasizing the importance of education and self-examination in combating party spirit and fostering a more just and equitable society.
