This book details the history of lead and zinc mining in Pennsylvania with historical records, reports from experts who visited the mines in the 19th century, and the author's own observations from visiting the sites in the 1920s. The mines were of importance not just to Pennsylvania but to the United States as a whole, supplying lead for musket balls during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, as well as zinc for the production of brass, and later, galvanized coatings. These mines played a key role in the formation of the nation and creation of new industries, and later fell into decline as zinc and lead began to be produced in greater quantities elsewhere.
