Excerpt from Tentative Provisions for the Development of Seismic Regulations for Buildings: A Cooperative Effort With the Design Professions, Building Code Interests and the Research Community
Natural hazards such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes and floods cause considerable life loss and property damage in the United States each year. Improved building practices leading to buildings better able to resist extreme loads are an effective means for reducing these losses. Recognizing this, in l972 the National Science Foundation and the National Bureau of Standards initiated a Cooperative Program in Building Practices for Disaster Mitigation. The program seeks to integrate activities and resources in Federal agencies and the work of professional organizations, private practitioners, and state and local governments in support of improved building practices.
The seismic design provisions in this report were developed as part of this Cooperative Program. The project included participation from the public and private sector Design professionals, researchers, Federal agency representatives, staffs from model code organizations and representatives from state and local governments from throughout the United States were involved. This broad participation contributed to the success of the effort.
