François Deàk naquit le 18 octobre 1803 a Sojtor (1) dans le co mitat de Zala. Son père y possédait une propriété rurale qu'il faisait valoir lui - même, comme tous les propriétaires hongrois, et dont les produits suffisaient à ses modestes besoins. Les Deàk appartenaient à la classe moyenne de la noblesse; ils étaient cependant d'an cienne famille la mère du fameux Verboczy, l'auteur du corpus jurz's hongrois, s'appelait Apollonia Deâk, de Deakfalva. Ils por taient dans leur écusson un livre et une plume, emblèmes d'aspect peu féodal, mais qui semblaient indiquer d'avance d'où devait pro venir l'illustration de ce nom, jusqu'à ce jour inconnu à l'histoire. François Deâk fit ses humanités a Gyor, puis étudia le droit à Raab. Il y débuta même comme avocat; mais, tout en plaidant et en s'ini tiant aux arcanes de la jurisprudence, il s'occupait avec passion de politique, comme tout le monde en Hongrie à cette époque.
