Excerpt from The Record, Vol. 54: Fall, 1977
To say that is has been a politically active fall for the College would be a gross understatement. Lieutenant gubernatorial candidates A. Joseph Canada '61 and Charles S. Robb debated the issues at hampden-sydney in mid-september. Characterized as temperate and indecisive the debate was moderated by President Bunting. Alan R. Ogden, the Labor Party candidate for governor, visited the campus in early' October. In early October also, eventual gubernatorial winner John N. Dalton defeated his Democratic opponent Henry E. Howell in a mock election sponsored by the College's Student Government. Dalton garnered 88 per cent of the vote and led a gop sweep of the three top state offices in the mock election. Dalton also visited the College as the campaign was peaking; he spoke on November 5 to a gathering of trustees, alumni, faculty, staff, and students.
