Synopsis

Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Department of Labor: July 1, 1966 to June 30, 1968

In summary, the number of workers affected by Labor Department services and programs has increased in the last two calendar years and the State's long-term economic growth is still on a strong uptrend. More than of these new employees are working in new or expanded manufacturing establishments, all of which are subject to regular safety inspections by the Department of Labor. An additional new employees are working in trade, services, construction, mining and other enterprises, most of which likewise are subject to Labor Department inspections for safety and for compliance with the Minimum Wage, Maximum Hour, and Child Labor Laws. In the manufacturing segment affected by our services, there are at least 500 new plants which did not exist four years ago. These new establishments and their thousands of employees have so increased the workload of our industrial safety inspectors that in spection services are having to be spread too thin. We cannot maintain for manufacturing plants in 1968, let alone in the coming biennial period, the same level of services, with the same inspection staff, that we rendered to 6 200 plants four years ago.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is the biennial report of the North Carolina Department of Labor for the 1966-68 period. It contains the author's observations and statistical data on the economic growth and industrial diversification of North Carolina, which resulted in record levels of employment, building activity, and industrial payrolls. The report analyzes factors contributing to the expansion of nonagricultural jobs in the state, and presents insights on the impact of industrial payrolls on per-capita income. The author provides a detailed breakdown of employment figures in the manufacturing sector, with data on average weekly and hourly earnings. The report also explores the expanding labor union presence in North Carolina, which has resulted in a peaceful and productive labor relations climate with relatively few strikes or disruptions in work. The author reviews significant labor-related legislation passed during the 1967 legislative session, and highlights areas where further review and potential legislative updates are needed, including increasing the minimum wage. The report also includes a comprehensive discussion of the department's enforcement of safety and health standards, with statistical data on inspections, violations, and compliances across various industries, including construction, mining, and manufacturing. The author provides an overview of the department's specialized accident prevention programs and safety educational services, which have helped to reduce the rate of disabling injuries in North Carolina industry by over 50% in the last two decades. This report provides valuable insights into the evolving labor landscape of North Carolina, the effectiveness of the state's labor policies, and the department's efforts to promote workplace safety and ensure a fair and productive work environment for all North Carolinians.
