Excerpt from Magnetic Testing
The work Of the National Bureau of Standards In magnetic testing includes the (a) investigation and development of testing methods; (b) testing of magnetic materials, and (c) investigations in the field of magnetic analysis.
Investigations of testing methods are carried out for the purpose. Of determining the possibilities and limitations Of existing methods with particular reference to present requirements. The development Of new methods and apparatus is undertaken when possible if existing methods are found to be inadequate.
Magnetic testing is done In connection with investigations involving the magnetic properties of materials. A small amount of magnetic testing is also done for the public. This service is limited in general to tests made for the purpose Of checking the accuracy of testing apparatus or for the settling of disputes arising from disagreement between different laboratories. Routin'e acceptance tests which can be made satisfactorily by commercial testing laboratories should not be requested except for special reasons acceptable to the Bureau. A fee Is charged for routine magnetic tests made for the public.
In the field Of magnetic analysis, the Bureau is primarily concerned with the study Of possible relationships between the magnetic proper ties of materials and their other physical -properties with the end In view of aiding In the development of nondestructive methods of test ing. Some attention is also given to the design of special apparatus for the application of magnetic analysis In a practical way.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an extensive guide to magnetic quantities, units, symbols, and their equations, focusing on the magnetic characteristics of different materials, principles employed in magnetic testing apparatus, and magnetic analysis. The book begins by defining the units of magnetomotive force, magnetic flux, and magnetic reluctance, deriving their relationships through the Ohm's law of the magnetic circuit. It then explores the concepts of magnetizing force, magnetic induction, permeability, intensity of magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility. The author presents standard procedures for testing magnetic materials, including normal induction and hysteresis, and describes various methods for obtaining accurate measurements, such as ballistic methods and the use of mutual inductors and fluxmeters. Different types of magnetic testing apparatus, including the Burrows permeameter, Fahy Simplex permeameter, and the High-H permeameter, are discussed along with their advantages and limitations. The book also covers the classification of magnetic materials, such as ferromagnetic, paramagnetic, and diamagnetic materials, and provides insights into the effects of hysteresis and eddy currents on core loss in alternating magnetic fields. By studying the relationships between magnetic properties and physical properties, the author demonstrates how magnetic analysis can be applied practically to nondestructive material testing. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
