This text-book has developed partly from the series of lectures which I have given since August, 1914, to the aviators at the Commonwealth Flying School, and partly from a more extended course at the University of Melbourne.

Books written for British or American readers, quite apart from their lack of local application, are somewhat confusing to Australian students, for the fundamental rules dealing 'with wind circulation have all to be reversed in the southern hemi sphere. Moreover, our latitudes are much lower than those of either of the two countries cited, so that many of our problems belong to tropical meteorology.
