Wendung und Redeweise, die den Mundarten Deutschlands ganz geläufig und in täglicher Uebung sind, über der weiten räumlichen Entfernung, die uns trennt, über der Jahrhunderte langen staatlichen Sonderentwickelung, die uns scheidet, ihren Schall nicht bis an unsere Küste getragen haben, unter uns niemals in lebendigen Lauten vernommen werden. Wie Spär lich und knapp ist unter uns, um nur dies Eine anzuführen, der Gebrauch des deutschen Sprichwortsl Aber auch des Tröstlichen genug klingt uns aus jenen Worten Jac. Grimme entgegen. Es steht wirklich die deutsche Sprache unter uns noch in lebendiger, kräftiger Uebung, so daß auch die lieb lichen Gedanken an die Sprache daheim im Mutterlande nicht ausbleiben. Jede Arbeit, die sich dem baltischem Sprach idiom zuwendet, wird noch immer vorwiegend mit Freude lohnen. Denn je länger je mehr wird es sich bestätigen, daß sie mit nichten einen unorganischen colonisten-jargon, daß sie auch nicht, wie Heim. V. Treitschke einmal vor Jahren gesagt, aber auch widerrufen hat, eine kümmerliche, abge blaßte, dürre, nur künstlich genährte Büchersprache vor sich hat, sondern einen eigenartigen, gesunden, in frischem, vollem Laube stehenden Zweig an dem deutschen Sprach stamm, der eine Vergleichung mit dem freilich andersgearteten Geäst der meisten deutschen Mundarten nicht zu scheuen hat.
