Ce n'est point ici un examen dicté par le dédain et par l'hostilité. La philosophie positive inspire tt ses disciples tmp de respect à l'égard de l'évolution spontanée de l'humanité en général, et trop de reconnaissance à l'égard des pénibles travaux et des grands services de l'humanité primitive en particulier, pour qu'aucun senti ment de ce genre puisse se trouver sous ma plume. Mais la critique historique, qui n'accepte plus que sous bénéfice d'inventaire les récits traditionnels, rencontrant dans toutes les histoires la créance aux com munications célestes, est bien obligée de se demander si elle doit la ré connaitre comme assurée ou partout, ou nulle part, ou seulement en certains temps et lieux.
